What we do

Why Every Child Must Trek

Today’s young people are growing up in a world of relentless pressures, from academics to social media, leaving many struggling with confidence, resilience, and a sense of belonging. They’re constantly connected online yet disconnected from themselves, their peers, and the natural world.

This is where trekking steps in. A trek is a real-world classroom. On a trek, students learn to navigate uncertainty, discover joy in simple living, and experience the power of community. Research shows that time in nature doesn’t just nurture physical health, it sharpens learning, strengthens emotional well-being, and reconnects children to what truly matters.

FAQs

Have Questions?

We’re here to help at every step!
Contact Us
What age groups do you cater to?
Icon - orange arrow pointing down
We offer programmes for all ages! We have had children as young as two years old join us on nature walks with their parents.
Will there be mobile network and electricity available throughout the trek?
Icon - orange arrow pointing down
Most of our base camps and many camping locations in South India have mobile network coverage. However, once you’re on the trek, you should expect patchy signal or even several days without network access. To ensure safety, our trek leaders stay connected with the base team through walkie-talkies. The base team, in turn, coordinates with your designated programme coordinator, who remains in touch with your school. We also recommend carrying extra batteries or power banks since electricity is not always available at campsites. Please note that we do not allow students to carry personal phones on our programmes — this helps them stay present, immerse fully in the outdoors, and make the most of the learning experience.
Is there a doctor or any medical help available at the campsite?
Icon - orange arrow pointing down
We don’t station doctors at our campsites. Instead, our programmes are led by highly trained facilitators and Trek Leaders, many of whom are certified Wilderness First Responders (WFRs) — the gold standard in outdoor medical emergency training worldwide. Why does this matter? In the outdoors, emergencies are very different from those in cities. Hospitals are not immediately accessible, communication can be limited, and terrain or weather can delay evacuation. That’s why having WFR-certified leaders on our team is non-negotiable. They are trained to conduct thorough medical assessments, monitor vital signs, administer emergency treatments, manage injuries and wounds, stabilise patients, and make safe evacuation decisions when necessary. Their training involves scenario-based simulations that prepare them to act calmly and decisively in high-stress situations. At InSOUL, this expertise is backed by Indiahikes’ legacy as India’s safest trekking organisation. Every Programme Facilitator goes through a rigorous 6–8 month training process, followed by trek-specific refreshers each season. They also carry comprehensive medical kits and, on Himalayan programmes, oxygen cylinders and pulse oximeters. Additionally, our partner doctor has authorised our Programme Facilitators to administer essential medicines and life-saving drugs when required. This layered approach — trained professionals, world-class equipment, robust communication, and detailed risk protocols — ensures that your students are in the safest hands possible, even in remote environments.
What is the toilet like on multi-day treks?
Icon - orange arrow pointing down
We know this is something many students (and parents!) worry about before a trek. But the truth is, our toilets are simple, private, and much more comfortable than most expect. We use clean, eco-friendly bio-toilets designed especially for the outdoors. They are set up in private tents a little away from the campsite, kept dry and odour-free with sawdust after every use. Most children start out nervous about using them, but very quickly get used to it — many even come back saying they prefer these toilets to the ones in cities! They’re safe, hygienic, and good for the environment, so students can focus on enjoying the trek without worry.
How is the tent accommodation on the trek?
Icon - orange arrow pointing down
Think of your tent as your own little mountain home! You’ll be staying in our Hillman Expedition Tents, which have been specially designed by the Indiahikes team to handle even the toughest Himalayan weather. They are strong, weather-proof shelters built to keep you safe and comfortable even in rain, snow, or strong winds.Inside, you’ll find a foam mat to sleep on, a warm sleeping bag, and a fresh hygiene liner just for you. Most students love the experience of sharing a tent with their friends — it feels like a cosy sleepover in the mountains! After a day of adventure, you’ll have a snug, dry, and secure space to rest, knowing your tent was designed with both comfort and safety in mind.
What is the process for booking a trek programme for my school?
Icon - orange arrow pointing down
Once you leave an enquiry on the website, our programme advisor will get in touch with you to understand the needs of your school and your specific learning goals. Once we understand your requirements, we will get back to you with a proposal which includes different locations, details of the programme and all other information you need to plan your next steps. On request, our team can visit your school to speak to students and parents about the programme, or do so in an online webinar to clear any doubts that anyone might have. Once you finalise a trek and dates for the same, you will have a designated programme coordinator assigned to you who supports you from the start to the end of the programme in terms of preparation, logistics and all further coordination.
