How we ensure students’ safety on a day hike

Trained and Certified Trek Leaders
Every trek is led by seasoned professionals trained in wilderness first aid, child engagement, and emergency response. They bring years of experience from leading high-altitude treks across the country.
Thoughtfully Selected Trails
We choose safe, beginner-friendly trails that are close to medical access and communication networks, yet far enough from city chaos to offer a deep wilderness experience.
Child-Specific Safety Protocols
With a low adult-to-student ratio (1:8 to 1:12), children are always within supervision. Routes have pre-identified rest and hydration stops to prevent exhaustion and dehydration.
Weather and Route Monitoring
Our team tracks weather conditions in real-time and is equipped with GPX navigation tools for added safety on the trail.
Emergency Preparedness
Ropes, walkie-talkies, first-aid kits, and evacuation plans are always in place. While serious incidents are rare, we are fully prepared for them.
Mindful Risk Exposure
We expose students to just enough challenge to build resilience, while maintaining a strong safety net. This helps them grow in confidence without feeling overwhelmed.
Our Methodology

What students learn on a day trek

For younger students (ages 3–7), a day trek sparks curiosity and wonder, offering rich sensory experiences through touch, sound, and smell. They develop foundational observational skills, improve social interaction and communication, and experience the joy and appreciation of the natural world.

For older students (8 and above), treks introduce environmental awareness in action and build confidence navigating natural terrain. They enhance motor skills and physical resilience, grow more adaptable and self-reliant, and gain insight into how their actions impact the environment.

How do you prepare students and teachers for the trek?
Icon - orange arrow pointing down
We conduct multiple briefings to ensure teachers, students, and the Indiahikes team are all on the same page, making the trek safer and more rewarding. Preparation begins with a briefing at the school or via video before the trek, followed by another when we reach base camp. Additional briefings take place at key points along the trail to keep everyone informed and aligned. These sessions also help build a sense of ownership and teamwork. While our team is always vigilant, safety is a shared responsibility, and students are given roles to look out for one another throughout the trek.
How do you handle weather during the trek?

We closely monitor weather conditions both before and during the trek to ensure safety is always our top priority. In case of severe weather, our team makes informed decisions to protect students while still allowing them to experience the outdoors. That said, light rain is not a risk—we encourage students to embrace it! Rain transforms the landscape, bringing the forest and mountains to life in magical ways. Unless there is a torrential downpour or a safety hazard, the trek continues. We advise schools and parents to pack raincoats or ponchos, which make all the difference between a comfortable, enjoyable trek and a soggy, uncomfortable one.
How do you choose trek locations for students?
Icon - orange arrow pointing down
We select treks that strike the right balance between safety and adventure—close enough to civilisation for connectivity and support, yet immersive enough for students to experience the outdoors fully. Day treks are designed to be easy and well-marked, making them accessible for all children. We also plan rest and hydration points along the trail to prevent overexertion and ensure students stay energized and safe throughout the trek.
What safety measures do you take on the trek?
Icon - orange arrow pointing down
Safety is our top priority, and we take multiple measures to ensure students are secure throughout the trek. While ropes are rarely needed on day treks, we carry them as an extra precaution for slippery sections, allowing leaders to enhance safety when necessary. Our team stays fully connected using walkie-talkies, ensuring the facilitator at the front and the guide at the back are always updated. Additionally, our team always carries GPX files of the trail for precise navigation, so even if someone takes a wrong turn, the route can be safely corrected.
Can adults and children attend the same class?
Icon - orange arrow pointing down
Absolutely! We have family workshops and parent-child classeswhere both adults and kids can learn and have fun together.
What happens in case of injuries?
Icon - orange arrow pointing down
We take extra precautions, especially on narrow or tricky sections of the trail. For more serious injuries like a sprain or ankle twist, our trained team is equipped to provide first aid and safely escort the child back to base.Minor scrapes and falls can happen, but children often bounce back quickly! These small bumps become part of the adventure, and most kids dust themselves off and continue the trek in good spirits.
